HerStory: Women in Tech Part II

Meet the Women of ITG: Shafina Hamid and Venny

March 15, 2024 | Blog

As the leading IT Solutions Partner in the Philippines and the ASEAN Region, IT Group, Inc. (ITG) knows and understands the value of diversity and inclusion, especially for women in tech. Last week, we heard stories from our leaders, sharing their experiences as women who lead, dream, and act with a goal in mind. Today, as we continue passing the torch by supporting other women in tech to be included, ITG Malaysia’s Practice Head, Shafina Hamid, and ITG Indonesia’s Sales Manager, Venny, gave their two cents as to why women’s inclusion, especially in tech, is important and necessary.

1. Why do you think women are important to occupy space in their chosen careers?

Shafina: Recently, one of our new colleagues I had recommended informed [me] that I was one of [her] inspirations [why she joined] ITG and thanked me for the affirmation. Having been in that space before where there [was a] glass ceiling [that we] often referred to, [I truly] respect women achieving their ambitions and dreams in the workplace. It struck a chord that I was in a position to make a difference for another woman, even inspire [them], I might add. There was no bias during the interview [and hiring] process, as she is qualified based on merit! In summary, we don’t just occupy space but can be equal contributors [and inspiration to promote inclusion] while ‘having it all’!

Venny: In recent years, more men have dominated various professions, leading to calls for better gender equality. It’s crucial to communicate that this is a cause worth fighting for, as women can play vital roles in the careers they choose.

2. In your life and/or career, what was the most unforgettable experience where you doubted yourself because you are a woman? How did you stand up for yourself and overcome it?

Shafina: I took a break of 10 years to raise a family at the peak of my career in Australia. Of course, [it] greatly impacted my career [and overall] growth. In fact, technology had changed, and Cloud was the new flavor when I returned to my career. I had to understand all these developments while upskilling myself to be on a level playing field. In those 10 years, however, I did freelance and successfully set up a thriving F&B business, so I did learn other skills that I can leverage now. There will be many times in a woman’s life that they may face such challenges but rest assured that with perseverance and faith, hard work always pays off.

Venny: In my job, most clients are men. [There was a time] during a meeting, they seemed uninterested and made disrespectful jokes. When questions came up, they looked at my male colleague, doubting my abilities. I decided to prove myself, vowing to excel in my field despite being a woman and younger than them. I took [that as a] challenge [that I need] to overcome [and eventually, I succeeded].

3. How does ITG help and support women in their overall careers?

Shafina: ITG provides a level playing field to all, regardless of [your] race, [gender, and personal beliefs]. Our strong HR team ensures issues and concerns are [properly] addressed through open and fair discussion. All applicants are considered based on experience and merit. [Today, many] organizations must create a balanced workplace where women can flourish. It is [much] appreciated that women bring warmth, resilience, and equality in the workplace while balancing the many responsibilities in their personal lives, which I can see in ITG!

Venny: When you have [a supportive company that helps you achieve your] career goals [and] has your back, it’s worth giving your all [and] not letting the opportunities go to waste. You know what? I found that in ITG.

4. What’s your hope for the future of women in tech?

Shafina: Women provide a different perspective that [we] should embrace and [welcome because, as you know, we are] half of the world’s population. [It is obvious and duly] noted that there are fewer women in management as they surrender to family obligations or personal stress. It is a [delicate] balancing act, creating an organization where mutual respect [and/or equality] prevails. [On top of it, we need to give] more attention to attracting and cultivating women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses in universities as their contribution is valued to inculcate equal-opportunity workplaces. I want to see the younger generation step into these roles while having it all!

Venny: In the rapidly growing tech industry, having both men and women involved will lead to better results. Women bring diverse perspectives and balance. Since technology affects everyone, including [and especially] women’s voices. I hope more women can join the field in the future.

5. If you have a message for all the women out there, especially women interested in joining the Tech Industry, what would it be? And why?

Shafina: There are many challenges [in the Tech Industry, especially for women]. [But if you work hard], so is the fruit of labor that comes of overcoming all of them. Above all else, don’t sacrifice what makes you unique or your personal life to achieve all your goals in life. You can have it all if you set your heart to it!

Venny: Coming from a non-IT background, I never imagined working in an IT company. Despite facing unfamiliar terms, I have been successful [in my chosen field] for almost 12 years now. Technology is for everyone, regardless of gender. There’s ample room for women to thrive in IT. If I can do it, so can you!
